“Years ago I picked up my first viola from Strobel's Violin Shop in Salem Oregon, I was 9. I’d heard an orchestra play Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber and decided I wanted to play. as soon as I could play even a little I started to try & make other sounds, new sounds.”
Trevor New is an electro-acoustic violist, composer, and technologist who blends music and interactive technology to create innovative, immersive experiences. As Artistic Director of Enjinn Arts, Trevor’s work is driven by a desire to connect people across locations, fostering a collective sense of creativity and community. His performances seamlessly integrate in-person and virtual audiences, using augmented reality and real-time networked collaborations to unite musicians from different time zones in a single performance. Cohere Touch, his latest hybrid-interactive piece, will be released on Platoon, Apple Music's record label, and published by the American Composers Orchestra's Earshot Publishing, in partnership with Boosey & Hawkes.
Trevor has also collaborated with renowned artists like Stevie Wonder, Joe Hisaishi, Madonna, Jon Batiste, Katy Perry and others. He played on the 2023 Grammy-winning Best Instrumental Composition “Refuge” by Geoffrey Keezer and has premiered works that explore social issues and human experiences, including the Quartet “Offer” by Ernest Casutto, a Holocaust survivor. Trevor has performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall for sold out audiences, and is featured in Films and TV shows including Mozart in the Jungle.
Trevor’s work integrates music and visuals through innovative technology, creating interactive performances that engage audiences in real-time, both in-person and virtually. His performances often invite community participation, transforming spaces into collaborative environments where sound, movement, and visuals converge to create a shared experience.
Whether building new musical pieces with students and community members or hosting interactive, hybrid performances for global audiences, Trevor’s work bridges creative worlds and brings people together through music and technology.
His work as a sound designer, engineer/producer, and performer can be found in a variety of media, including film scores, arranging, electronic music, TV. In a Timeout New York review of a recent production of the play "Your Hair Looked Great" his music was described as "Smartly Scored". Trevor designs solo performances playing his viola and singing and using Ableton Live for looping and effects. He has developed his custom sound setup which features the Cohere Touch System, an system that allows people to make music together and create on the same shared canvas wherever they are, midi controllers made by Keith McMillen, and custom visual effects. He also has played at Mediation workshops and Sound Baths around Brooklyn and the Northeast.
